Fitbit
Pedometer and Walking Program
The company offers small, wireless pedometers to
help employees track their daily activity level.
For $10 initial investment and a little
extra healthy exercise, you could save more than 10 times that amount on
family coverage on the your medical plan! Point yourself toward a better
lifestyle!
What
is a Fitbit pedometer?
The Fitbit pedometer is a small and discreet device that tracks your
activity level. It can be slipped in a pocket or clipped onto clothing to
track:
Daily steps | |
Distance | |
Calories burned | |
Activity level | |
Stairs climbed | |
Sleep quality |
It uploads wirelessly to a personal account you set up at fitbit.com, and it syncs whenever you are near the computer where you have your base station located. There are many tools and online options with this pedometer, as well.
How much
does it cost?
The company subsidizes most of the purchase price of
your first Fitbit pedometer, covering $65
of the normal price of $75. If you need to replace a lost or broken Fitbit,
or you want additional pedometers for family members, the full $75
purchase price will apply.
What do I
have to do to receive the discounted health care insurance premium?
By meeting the requirements of the program, you can
earn a quarterly wellness discount on your
health care insurance premium. The current requirements are:
Wear the Fitbit pedometer daily throughout the quarter
Have the base unit set up near a computer, so the data gets uploaded onto your personal website each week
Average 6,000 steps daily on a weekly basis (Sunday through Saturday) during the quarter |
I'm not
sure I can reach that many steps...
The average American who works at a desk job walks 5,177 steps a day.
5,000 and below is considered sedentary. We are asking you to break that
sedentary barrier, and walk a few extra steps above the average
American! You don’t have to start a rigorous daily exercise program to
reach your step total! Below are some simple activities that would
increase your daily step count.
Park in the outer spaces of the parking lot at work. Walking from the outside spaces into either the administration building or the hangars would amount to approximately 400 steps just one way.
Take the stairs! Walking up and down the stairs just one trip each day instead of using the elevator will result in an extra 100 steps each day.
Take a 10 minute walk on your lunch hour or after work. 10 minutes of walking at a steady pace (about a 20 minute mile pace) would result in about a 1000 steps! Just 10 minutes for an extra 1,000 steps could get you to your goal quickly. You can download a map of walking routes at ILN with step counts and approximate mileage. |
What
information about me will be shared?
In order to participate in the Walking Program and gain the wellness
discount for health insurance premiums, you will have to sign an agreement
to allow the program administrator to see your step count.
Beyond sharing the step count with the program administrator, you don't have to share any other details. You set the privacy parameters; you can allow others to see as much or as little of your online data as you want. However, fitbit.com provides options for teams and competitions, if you so choose.

Fitbit User Tips:
Here are some helpful tips on how to make your Fitbit experience more
enjoyable.
Washing Machine Reminder: You may want to put a sign on your washing machine: "WHERE IS MY FITBIT?" Several users have reported that their pedometer did not make it through the wash cycle in good shape.
Tether: To reduce the chances of losing your pedometer, you might consider a tether. HR has Fitbit tethers available for $0.40, or you can use a lanyard or other cord to make your own. Then you can loop or clip the Fitbit to your clothing so you won't lose it even if it falls out of a pocket or belt clip.
Report issues: Having problems with your Fitbit pedometer? Here is an online form you can use to submit issues: contact.fitbit.com |
